Steps to Establish a Nonprofit

  • Define Your Purpose and Name: Clearly outline your mission, vision, and the specific community need you aim to solve.

  • Recruit a Board of Directors: Secure at least three individuals to serve in key roles (president, secretary, treasurer) to meet legal requirements.

  • File Articles of Incorporation: File this document with your state’s filing office (often the Secretary of State) to officially create the corporation.

  • Get an EIN: Apply for an Employer Identification Number (EIN) from the IRS.

  • Draft Bylaws and Policies: Create internal rules for how the nonprofit will operate, including conflict-of-interest policies.

  • File for 501(c)(3) Tax Exemption: Submit IRS Form 1023 or 1023-EZ to the IRS for federal tax-exempt status.

  • Register with the State: Complete state-level tax exemptions and register for charitable solicitation permits to legally ask for donations.
